Lewes - 4 Crowborough 2s - 1

Top took on bottom as relegation threatened Borough travelled to Lewes.  Borough arrived with a strong squad hoping to cause a major upset but despite a battling performance it was not to be.  Honours were even in the first half until a breakaway led to a short corner which the home side clinically dispatched.  The away side fought back with Grace Patient, Brooke Steadman and Nina Williams coming close to a breakthrough.   Defensively Borough were also on form with Hilary Lynsey, Liz Wigglesworth, Sarah Bell and Hayley Fishnden all working hard to stifle the table-topping attack.

Crowborough began the second half confidently with both Cath Warnock and Sam Haizelden playing defence splitting balls to the pacy Ellie Wilding. However, they committed too many players foward and were twice stung by breakaway goals.  A flicker of hope came when Warnock played an inch perfect ball to Vicky Dennett who knocked it goalward before hurdling the keeper.  Amber George was influential as Borough put on pressure in search of a second but the home side's keeper was a match for any efforts.   Hilary Brown, playing in goal for the visitors for the first time this season had a superb match, saving more than half a dozen goalbound efforts.  The last quarter saw Borough tire and Lewes were eager to take advantage, placing one more exacting shot past the keeper to complete the scoring.
Crowborough are now staring relegation firmly in the face but still retain hopes of survival.

Mens 2s
Lewes 1 v 2  Crowborough Men’s 2s

This was always set to be a tough away game against local rivals Lewes; a late flood lit game was on paper, going to favour the home side.  Borough wanted to continue their recent winning form so started off strong by dominating the Midfield with experienced players Martin Fotheringham and Darren Pulman.
Lewes soon found their stride and pushed forward but the Borough defence and goalkeeper was more than a match for them.
Shortly into the first half the younger players from Crowborough soon found their way into the Lewes goal area, Ollie McCrow powered along the back line and crossed to the in-form super striker Tom Callingham, who calmly placed the ball in the back of the Lewes goal.
The second half once again saw Borough pressurise the Lewes side and Ian Easton soon put them 2 ahead. Easton scored again but it was disallowed and Lewes clawed one back from a penalty corner to make it 1-2, they continued to pile pressure onto Borough but they were not to be beaten. Final score Lewes 1 Crowborough 2.
Special thanks goes to the travelling supporters which week on week outnumber the opposition home or away giving encouragement to the Borough side.
Next week is at home against the in-form Worthing side

Men's 2's  7 v  2    Southwick Men's 2's

Southwick turned up looking to take points off their closest rivals in the league.  They got off to good start taking an early lead.  This galvanised Crowborough into action and they began to pressure the Southwick defence.  With Guy Matthews back in the side and returnee Darren Pulman excelling in midfield, this pressure was kept up until the Southwick defence was breached and Crowborough equalised and then took the lead.  Martin Fotheringham was his usual calm and reassuring presence in the centre of midfield.  Then the youngsters showed their potential with excellent skill and stamina from Zack Dawson, Ollie Yeoman, Sam George and Ollie McCrow.  Tom Callingham, who has found it difficult to score of late was"Johnny on the spot" to bag an excellent and well deserved hat trick.  Ian Easton continued his recent outstanding contribution with another brace.  As the game wore on the the goals continued to come.  Crowborough still needed to defend and were helped in this with some skillful saves from keeper Peter Bradshaw.  Keenen Smith just did what now seems to come naturally and kept his side of the pitch quiet and kept the various attackers at bay.  David Hathaway, in a new skin tight shirt, showed he had lost none of his skill and determination and is a welcome addition to the squad. This victory was much needed and most deserved.  This squad of players is still very much a work in progress, but are beginning to produce quality hockey and getting the results they deserve.

Ladies 2s 0 v 5 Hailsham

A depleted Crowborough side performed well beyond the score line to record a disappointing defeat. With keeper Ashleigh Fisk out injured after breaking a rib in the previous game, untried or tested keeper Kate Rahn stood between the posts. Having never kitted up as a keeper before, this was a brave decision and the young player did well to make some decent saves.
Borough were missing three centre backs but the trio of Cath Warnock, Sarah Bell and Hayley Fishenden looked pretty formidable.
In midfield Borough were again without their key player in Sam Haizelden but the makeshift unit produced some good running and some threatening forward moves. Alice Burch brought pace, Amber George and Vicky Dennett made some telling tackles and Hilary Brown was a great wide outlet.
Borough opted for a three prong attack with the pace of Brooke Steadman, Nina Williams and Grace Patient often out-stripping the opposition defence. Only the final ball was lacking.
Borough are now deep in a relegation battle but with effort like this they may still scrape to safety.

Roedean 5 Crowborough 2s - 0

Crowborough defended bravely but were unable to survive the Roedean onslaught. The home side found Borough hard to break down in the first half with Sarah Bell, Liz Wigglesworth and Hilary Lynsey holding firm at the back. However, Borough's three man midfield were soon overrun by the speedy opposition and Kate Rahn dropped back to the middle to fill the gaps.

Borough parried attack after attack before keeper Ashley Fisk was eventually beaten.

The away side came back strongly forcing a short corner worked neatly between Nina Williams, Brooke Steadman and Rahn. However, despite some good counter attacks, Roedean held the upper hand going into the break leading by two after a carefully placed second goal.

Amber George worked wonders on the right to the extent little attacking play by the opposition went near her zone. Roedean came out from the traps in the second half sneaking the early third goal which put the game beyond Borough.

Vicky Kift and Hilary Brown offered a variety of options on the left as Borough sought to get on the score sheet but it was to no avail.
Crowborough's Hayley Fishenden made some goal saving interventions which along with the last ditch tackles of Wigglesworth kept the score down to a more reasonable reflection of the actual game; if scored like boxing it would have been a lot closer.

The pace of Roedean proved their greatest weapon with two more zippy goals seeing Borough go down 5-0.

Crowborough Men's 2's  1  v   6 Mid-Sussex Men's 2's

A visit from top of the table side Mid-Sussex had led the struggling Crowborough side that they were in for a difficult morning.  But from the start the side displayed stoic and dogged defence in an effort to keep the superior Mid-Sussex side at bay.  The opposition were always going to score goals and it was a credit to the makeshift defence of Andy and Ashley Fishenden, with Guy Lungmuss to try and limit the damage.  Peter Bradshaw, in goal, made some fine saves, but the pressure inevitably told and the Mid-Sussex side got themselves into an unasailable 3-0 position.  From then on it would have been easy for the Crowborough side to let their heads drop and let the goals flood in.  But not this afternoon.  Some determined and strong defence by the Midfield of Martin Fotheringham, Zack Dawson, Greg Surridge and Dave Shaw helped to shore up the defence and actually create some good counter attacks. The two substitutes, Tim Abrahart and Ollie McCrow aquitted themsleves well.  Some fine work up front by the trio of Tom Callingham, Sam George and Ian Easton led to a fine, well executed counter attacking goal.  The second half was more of the same, which was never going to see Crowborough take any points, but they were able to limit the damage against a skilful, albeit truculent Mid-Sussex side.  A bystander would have found it difficult to determine the winning side, such was the level of dissent exhibited by the Mid-Sussex side.  They were deserved winners, but rather let themselves down with their poor discipline and were hardly an example to the numerous juniors in the Crowborough ranks.  Crowborough have two games to go until the Xmas break; They are keeping it together and showing real class and fortitude, despite the run of poor results; Their time will come!!

Crowborough Men's 2's  2 v  2  Lewes Men's 4's

After five straight defeats it was becoming important that this team of Old wise owls and young lions were able to get something out of a game soon.  Today was that day!  An enlarged squad battled from start to finish against a familiar Lewes side, who broke quickly and were looking to take advantage of Crowborough's run of poor results.  The team were unlucky to go one behind, conceding from a short corner; but rallied and were soon counter attacking and putting Lewes under pressure.  The pressure led to a short corner, expertly converted by a trademark Laurie Torrington drag flick.  Some key positions were well covered this week, with Zak Dawson firstly impressing at half-back,  then showing his versatility at Right wing.  Ashley Fishenden, returning after freeing up his packed diary, slotted into the defence and looked capable and composed.  Steve Alcock returning from injury acquitted himself well and was a useful foil for the dependable Martin Fotheringham.  With Guy matthews at the back, giving yet another demonstration of solid defending the team is beginning to show belief in all areas of the pitch.  The youngsters of Tom Callingham, Sam George, Ollie Yeoman, Keenen Smith, Tim Abrahart and Greg Surridge all continue to impress each week.  After another goal from Lewes, the teams heads did not drop, but rather dug deep to press the Lewes defence and win several excellent challenges.  Ollie Yeoman was unlucky not to score from a well worked passing move.  That was left to another flick from Man of the match, Laurie Torrington and with little time left in the game, the Crowborough team shored up their defences to take a well deserved point.  The points will be hard earned this season, but the team is on the right track.

Crowborough matched Lewes every step of the way but could not reply to their breakaway goal. In a hard fought game Borough had the majority of the play. Kate Rahn saw a powerful shot zip just wide. Ellie Wilding's penetrative cross just skimmed the stick of Grace Patient with the equalising goal just a whisker away. Brooke Steadman continued to forage down the channels and Amber George was winning her midfield battle.

The returning Vicky Ball added much needed experiece and pace to the attack. Pulling the strings from the middle she almost created the chance to take a point from the game. Sam Haizelden and Hayley Fishenden added further experience to the centre of the park with Haizelden's long balls sure to create chaos in the opposition half.

Charlotte Richardson worked hard despite carrying an injury and captain Vicky Dennett withdrew midway through the second half after failing to run off an ankle knock.

Lewes managed few attacks due to the defensive solidity of Williams, Dillingham, Bradshaw and Wigglesworth although Fisk was on good form when shots made it goal bound.

Joint captain Vicky Dennett said: "Everyone battled so hard. We are just inches away from taking the points."

Mens 2s
South Saxons Men's 2's  6  v   1   Crowborough Men's 2's

A fine game of hockey, played in the right spirit, which says a great deal about both these clubs.  Saxons are an extremely well drilled outfit, with a good mixture of young and old, similar in fact to the Crowborough side, just it became clear that their mixture were a little better than ours!!  Despite a ferocious start by Saxons, the Crowborough defence remained resolute and it was somewhat of a surprise when Crowborough took the lead through a fast counter attack, well finished by Tom Callingham.  This was perhaps the high point of the Crowborough afternoon, as normal Saxons service was soon resumed and they began to gain the upper hand, firstly equalising, then taking a small advantage into the half time break.  The second half was more of the same, with some excellent passing moves by Saxons, which lead to an increase in their lead.  Saxons deserve credit for playing in such a fair and positive fashion and respecting the Crowborough team.   The Crowborough team are a work in progress, perhaps a season too soon to be in this league, so they will learn from the tough experience of being on the receiving end of a drubbing each week and try and take the positives from the poor results.  If at the end of the season they can return from the pitch with a smile still in place it will say a great deal about their character and maturity.  The team will grow as a unit and with the wise heads of Martin Fotheringham, Guy Matthews ( Yesterday's Player of the match) and Ian Easton nurturing the talent of Sam George, Ollie Yeoman, Keenan Smith and Tom Calllingham the future will still be bright.  Captain Guy Lungmuss and Vice Andy Fishenen are happy that moral remains high, despite the adversity of defeat and will continue to marshal the team through the tough winter months

East Grinstead Men’s 4th XI – 3 Crowborough Men’s 1st XI – 8
Crowborough started the game in a positive manner and had some early possession resulting in some good attacking play. Pete Bradshaw was forced in to some good saves, however the early East Grinstead pressure led to a well worked goal. Again Crowborough lost possession and found themselves 2-0 down. Before the team could breathe, Crowbor ough conceded a penalty flick which even though Bradshaw got his glove to the ball, he was unable to prevent the goal. This had a major effect on the Crowborough team who found a new lease of life. After some minor changes the team started to string together some good attacking plays. Eventually the breakthrough came when Crowborough broke on the right hand side and resulting in Nick Waterton passing to an unmarked John Parker who slotted the first goal home superbly. This gave the team a huge belief and another well worked play involving Adam Cro, Harry Turner and Dave Shaw would allow Dave Charlesworth to power home the second goal. In the second half Crowborough moved up a gear and some very fast flowing hockey ended in some close chances. 10 minutes in another great movement involving John Parker, Merlin Smerthurst and Stuart Clark presented Martin Fotheringham the perfect opportunity to draw the game in which he converted in his normal calm manner. Some strong defending from the man of the match David Lowries ensured Crowborough did not concede again. Crowborough eventually took the lead when a rare short corner presented them with an opportunity to score. Nick Waterton having his first shot blocked was eventually able to lob the goal keeper in a surprising fashion, Philip Clark also made sure the ball ended in the net by distracting the goal keeper. A mix up on the side lines caused Luke Edwards to be sin binned for 10 minutes, however, the Crowborough defence of Keenan Smith, David Lowries and Harry Turner ensured that the attacking threat of East Grinstead was minimised. Once Luke Edwards returned to the pitch, he instantly terrorised the East Grinstead defence and set up Phil Clark who scored the 5th Goal with a composed finish. Steve Alcock & Luke Edwards were involved in the 6th goal converted by John Parker for his second. Luke Edwards eventually got himself on the score sheet after some nice attacking play from Harry Turner, Phillip Clark and Dave Charlesworth. East Grinstead still attacked and twice Bradshaw was called in to action by saving several drag flicks from short corners. The last goal came from another superb attack by Crowborough resulting in Dave Charlesworth scoring his second of the day with a well timed flick over the goal keeper. Thereby finishing the goal scoring and remarkable come back from Crowborough.

Crowborough Ladies 1 3 v 1 Honeybees Ladies 1s

From the starting whistle both teams battled it out and it was end to end stuff.  The home side conceded the first goal but quickly retaliated and drew level again by Hannah Knowles (Player of the Match) bring fed by Becky Kift, who drove the ball into the D finding Knowles for the finish.

Both teams determination to seek comfort by a goals advantage was denied, until the final 15 minutes where Crowborough worked hard to deliver pristine passes out to the wings, finding Vikki Link and Alice Burch. The teamwork paid off only for Knowles to make a magnificent run into the shooting D and slip it past the goalkeeper for a 2-1 lead.

Crowborough stepped up a notch keeping strong at the back with Hayley Fishenden making some crucial interceptions, along with some cracking saves from Julie Bradshaw keeping that one goal advantage.   Strikes from Naomi Walker, Becky Kift, Hannah Knowles and Abi Dawson were unsuccessful but the win of a penalty corner resulted in another goal, where Nikki Becvar pummelled the ball into the backboard with the straight strike.   A great comeback win following their heavy defeat against Hailsham last week proves the teams’ determination and team work.   The ladies have a one week break and are back in action on November 5th.

Crowborough Ladies 2s 2 - Burgess Hill 3

A last ditch winner denied a battling Borough side what would have been a much deserved point.

Borough came to the fixture deprived of half a dozen of their strongest players but instead of wilting some new stars took up the mantle.
Borough had taken the lead early in the first half when Grace Patient forced the ball in after fantastic battling by Ashleigh Fisk and Brooke Steadman. The home side were put under more pressure by the visitors before scrambling a breakaway goal.
Borough took control of the game once more with Amber George, (lady of the match), playing the match of her life in midfield. When the opposition did surge forward Julie Patient was there to protect the goal with some first class saves.
Against the run of play the home side sneaked ahead but the visitors would not give up. A Vicky Dennett cross was fired into the net by the impressive Nina Williams to bring parity once more.

Good work by returning midfielder Anna Crompton, who bossed the centre, saw Borough create a number of chances and Hilary Brown, Hilary Lindsay and Liz Wigglesworth were solid at the back despite increasing pressure.

The late winner by Burgess Hill was hard to take after such a battling display, but Borough, despite leaving pointless, recorded their most cohesive display of the season.

Crowborough Men’s 2s 3  v Horsham 7

A Challenging start to the season was not made easier by the well-established visitor’s from Horsham. While the Crowborough team held their own in the first half with some solid play from the midfield and defence, the Horsham side turned up the pressure at the restart creating several goals from well executed attacks. The Borough team showed grit and determination creating many opportunities, two goals from Ian Easton and one from Guy Mathews and some truly outstanding play from left back Lawrence McCabe and attacking midfielder Zak Dawson.
Crowborough will be hoping their fortunes change when they travel to Hastings and take on South Saxons in two weeks’ time

Crowborough Crowletts 0 South Saxon Warriors 0

The Crowletts hosted Hastings side South Saxons junior hockey on a bright sunny morning at Beacon astro, with several regular players unavailable the Crowletts were down to a bear eleven. This gave an opportunity for debutant Charlie Ralph and fringe players to show their ability, they did not let themselves or their team down. The Saxons junior players were very skilful and attacked with pace. The defence of Andrew Orchard dominating the centre and Alex Bellamy and Alex Hurworth offering excellent support, kept these attack at bay.The midfield brothers of Corrie and Elliott Lindsay together with Adult player Neil Baldwin showed real class in distributing to the wings. With Zach Dawson ( man of the match )as usual running the game with tireless running and passing. Dom Spiller and Charlie on the wings proved a thorn in the Saxons defence. It was once again very good to see Michael Orchard our much improved goalkeeper recording another clean sheet.Little Josh Finch was given little service at centre forward but cannot be criticised for effort. This result is for the Crowletts a point gained not two points lost given our inexperienced juniors compared to Saxons juniors, with two draws and one victory in this campaign this is good Development hockey and bodes well for the rest of the season !!

Men's 2s

Southwick Men's 2's 1 v Crowborough Men's 2's 0

Close, but no Cigar!

The sort of game that could have gone either way.  Crowborough started well, with some good attacking opportunities, but were unlucky not too score.  It was a lapse of concentration and one or two instances of dribbling rather than making the quick pass, that led to a good Southwick counter attack and a far post tap in from an excellently delivered cross.  The second half continued with Crowborough continuing to press, winning penalty corner after penalty corner, but not being able to convert these set pieces into goals.  Martin Fotheringham and Sam George worked hard in Midfield to keep the attacks coming.  Tom Callingham was always a threat and unlucky not to get more opportunities and Neil Baldwin and Ian Easton, with their eons of experience could not unlock the Southwick defence and that is how it ended.  With three games gone and the league as tough as it is; it is perhaps going to be a stern test of character to remain positive; but the team have the right balance of youth and maturity and it would be a shame to let emotions cross that boundary into dissent.  The team will grow as a unit and need to take heart, remember the basics and take pride in the progress they are still making.

Brighton 0 Crowborough 2s - 1

Borough recorded their first win of the season with this hard fought victory. Borough caused most of the early pressure, with Kate Rahn and Grace Patient using their pace to unnerve the opposition defense.

The breakthrough came when Kate Rahn's short corner was fired home by Sam Haizelden with an emphatic strike.  Away goalkeeper Julie Patient then made a series of impressive saves to protect Borough's narrow lead.

Alice Birch worked hard to secure the midfield while Brooke Steadman's second half pace ensured the opposition could never rest.
There was still time for defender Hilary Brown to clear a Brighton shot off the line before Borough secured their victory.

Mens 2s

Crowborough 2's 1  v St. Francis 1's  3
Going in the right direction

The result seemed a little unfair to the Crowborough side, who battled hard throughout the 70 minutes and deserved at least a point. St Francis are a well drilled outfit with some very swift forwards and break quickly to chase the long ball. Crowborough began well, with some neat passing and good movement off the ball. The combination of Martin Fotheringham and Laurie Torrington in midfield added strength and a fulcrum from which to build. Excellent support play on and off the ball by Man of the match Steve Alcock, led to some good attacking opportunities. Tom Callingham and Ian Easton were unlucky on several occasions, before a well worked move ended with Laurie Torrington scoring. The juniors in the side continued to impress, with Sam George popping up on the right wing this week, to provide problems for the St. Francis defenders. The opposition drew level just before half time with a trade mark quick counter attack. The second half was the same pattern, with Crowborough unlucky not to take the lead again. Ollie Yeoman was excellent thoughout, showing good stamina and maturity beyond his years. Keenan Smith played the entire game as if he'd been in the side for some years and will be a difficult proposition for attackers to get past in years to come It was unfortunate therefore when two very quick counter attacks by St. Francis produced two quick goals, effectively ending Crowborough's hopes. But heads were held high and the team is just beginning to gel as a unit and irrespective of the result, they played an entertaining, passing game and are developing nicely.

Mens 1s

Crowborough Mens 1s 6 v 3 Eastbourne Mens 2's

Crowborough travelled to Edenbridge Leisure Centre (in Kent) to play their first league HOME match against a side that were relegated from the divisional league above last season. A 1030 start was a blessing on this glorious day as the temperature was already hot at the start. The Crowborough side were nervous but looking forward to the match, and within minutes of starting we had opened the scoring with an excellent explosion of an attack in open play. Crowborough came together as a team, passing expertly from the forwards Smethurst and Parker and from mid-fielders Turner and and Tear.

The Eastbourne side did not look like they could take the pace and by half time the score was a massive, 3 -0. the second half fight back came but the Crowborough defense rallied and assisted in setting up more attacks. More goals ensued taking the tally to 5, a short spell off the pitch by goalie Downing due to a minor slippage problem gave the opposition a chance to score 2 goals. The final score was a respectable 6-3, although a penalty stroke ended the game, Turner could not make it 7 goals for Crowborough. A great team effort by all the players on the day.

Boys Development

Boys hockey development league ( 11 - 15 yr ) Crowborough Crowletts 0 v 0 Hailsham Millers
The first league game for the Crowletts saw a very different side to the team that won the league last year. With five of last years more senior players now flourishing in our men's team it gave the club an opportunity to bring in several new faces.Whilst this game remained goalless it still made for good spectator viewing. The defence of Neil Baldwin (our one allowed adult), Alex Bellamy and Andrew Orchard looked a solid bet for not conceding too many this campaign. New comers of Reece Kingham, Corrie Lindsay, Cameron White, Dom Spillar and Josh Finch all had good solid games and will certainly be regulars in this team.As always Zach Dawson ran the midfield and Alex Hurworth ( man of the match )had a terrific game.Freddie Knott linked very well with the wingers of Todd Pannell and Dom.Overall a good display and a good point earned. The boys will learn this season that a little more composure will be needed in front of goal.A good start !! Special mention to Laurie Torrington for replacing the tired Neil Baldwin at the back..

Ladies 1s
Crowborough 1s 1 v 1 Brighton & Hove 3s

Crowborough’s second game of the season was at home in the scorching October temperatures!! Crowborough had a strong side of 16 key players, which gave many opportunities for changing team dynamics.

The first half didn’t get off to Crowborough’s strongest start but the workings of Paula Lungmuss and Nikki Becvar in the middle kept Crowborough in the game. As did goalkeeper Carrie Taylor who made some cracking saves after Brighton’s opportunities on goal.

The first goal in the game came from Hannah Knowles; it was a brilliant deflection after a strike on goal at a penalty corner. Brighton responded by coming back and working hard to get a goal opportunity but the defensive line, Kim Fenner, Chloe James and Hayley Fishenden stopped them from gaining this opportunity.

Before half time after working hard in the heat Brighton equalised much to the disappointment of Crowborough. Olivia WalkerBecky Kift both created opportunities for Crowborough just before the half time whistle.
Half time saw an opportunity for Crowborough to see their weaknesses and improve on them vastly in the second half.
Crowborough came back out after half time with a fighting spirit and the hard work from Naomi Walker and Anna Henley as well as Knowles gave Crowborough opportunities on goal but unfortunately nothing came of it. Becvar made some incredible runs down the centre with support from Laura Garland on the left who not only had an attacking game but a strong defensive game as well.
and

Brighton saw their opportunities and took them with some speedy attacks on goal after changing their goalkeeper at halftime, Kate Innes and Carolyn Alsopp worked hard on the right to stop Brighton finding success.  Abi Dawson moved to centre forward and made some good play opportunities for Becvar and the rest of the team.

Crowborough were unlucky in their attacking ‘D’ when a cross from Vikki Link to Knowles didn’t result in a Penalty Flick after a foot on the line from a Brighton defender.

Everyone on the pitch was grateful to hear the final whistle after 70 minutes in the scorching heat. Nikki Becvar achieved well-deserved player of the match.
Crowborough go into their next game against Chichester Centurions at home 13.30 with strong foundations.

Mens 2s

Eastbourne 3s 9 v 2 Crowborough 2s

The result probably fails to reflect that it was a much more even game.  Lesson were learn't about making the ball do the work and not squandering possession.  The start was poor from which Crowborough never looked likely to recover from.  The sloppiness in defense for the first 3 goals scored by Eastbourne, led to a simplifying of the tactics and clearing the ball from defense, when under pressure.  Eastbourne are a well drilled outfit, with plenty of experience and skilled youth at their disposal.  But it has to be said, that this embryonic Crowborough team showed real quality in the second half and a degree of spirit that will be sorely tested this season.  The work rate of Sam George was phenomenal throughout the game and he was easily Crowborough's player of the match. Ollie Yeoman again showed he is more than capable at this level.  Greg Surridge was quiet by his own high standards and will no doubt be back to his best next week.  Keenan Smith, a new addition in defense, kept going throughout the game and is maturing into a complete hockey player.  The forwards showed real attacking sprit and were deserved of their two goals, one each for Tom Callingham, again always in the right spot to finish a move and the industrious Ollie McCrow, who is continuing to impress.  Some progress needs to be made, but in terms of attitude and commitment, they were all winners yesterday.

Ladies 2s
Middleton & Bognor 3 v 0 Crowborough 2s

The Ladies 2s faced a number of challenges in this match: the heat, an experience and well organised opposition and perhaps most significantly a pitch which was unsuited for hockey! Playing on a newly laid pitch which is more suited for football the players had to quickly adapt to a different style of hockey - quick push passes were impossible on a pitch which slowed the ball and bobbled repeatedly.  Despite these challenges the team put up a hard battle holding out until mid-way through the first half when two quick goals by M&B effectively won the game.  Crowborough continued to battle hard despite losing another goal just before half time but the team spirit really showed through in the second half with Crowborough creating a number of goal scoring chances that they were extremely unlucky to convert - with a goal line clearance by M&B.  Kate Rahn, Grace Patient and Brooke Steadman showed that as a combination in the forward line they can create chances - using their speed and skills - and were unlucky not to score.  The midfield worked hard in the heat especially in the second half when M&B left a number of players forward.  Ashleigh Fisk in goal showed that she is growing in confidence with some good shoot stops and clearances whilst a couple of the veteran defenders relived their "grass playing" days in the turgid pitch.  Special thanks to Becky Lindsay for playing and commendation for Brooke for playing on despite feeling unwell - probably caused by the fumes given off by the pitch!

Horsham 4’s Vs Crowborough 1s Ladies.

Crowborough ladies first league game of the season was away to a well drilled Horsham side. Crowborough started well with a great early cross from Naomi Walker but just out of reach for the attacking Hannah Knowles. The first strike at goal came from Walker after a solo run from the half way line, causing the Horsham keeper to pull off a great save. Half way into the second half Horsham came back strong breaking down the defense to put them one goal up. Crowborough responded well with Abi Dawson striking from a penalty corner testing the keeper. Becky Kift delivered some great diagonal balls allowing Vicky Link and Nikki Becvar the opportunity to unsettle the Horsham team. Horsham broke again with a hard shot at goal but Crowborough keeper Carrie Taylor pulled off an athletic save and defender Laura Garland kept their team in the game as the half time whistle went.

Crowborough came out fighting with great link play from Kim Fenner, Chloe James and Becvar who steamed down the right wing crossing to Kift leaving her to weave through the defense and level the score just five minutes into the second half. Hayley Fishenden, Kate Innes and lady of the match Paula Lungmuss battled hard to keep Horsham out until they caught the defense unaware and scored their second. The borough ladies kept their heads and earned them self’s a penalty corner in the last two minutes of the game. The Horsham keeper looked like she was going to keep her team ahead after several saved shots until Carolyn Alsopp capitalized on the rebound and drove the ball into the back of the net, finishing the game 2-2.

Next week see’s Crowborough ladies take on Brighton 3s at home.

MENS 2s

St Francis 2's 2 v Crowborough 2's  5

A good start!

Having seen the Men's 1's come unstuck against St. Francis 1's, due respect was shown to their 2nd team......and perhaps a leaf taken out of their long ball strategy. The game started evenly, with both sides sizing each other up. St. Francis went ahead, which seemed to be the spark for the Crowborough side to get going. Captain Guy Lungmuss, on a rare excursion into the opposition half struck a low shot, which crept in to level things. The team kept up some good pressure, using the tactical long ball to out fox the St. Francis youngsters ( who perhaps had never seen the tactic before). Tom Callingham casually scored for Crowborough to take the lead. Then the team started to hit their stride with Sam George excelling in midfield and mesmorising the opposition. More goals followed from Matt Eyres and Laurence McCabe. It was left to the end for a brilliant counter attack, to be finished off by the ever busy Ollie Yeoman. This team contains quite a few youngsters, who acquitted themselves well and proved beyond doubt, that they are now genuine Men's hockey players and the future for some years to come.

We all know how encouraging it is for the team when there's support from the sidelines and as they're hovering above the relegation area in Division 2 they'd really appreciate it.

The dinner dance is drawing near so don't miss out. Cheques and menu choices to Nikki Becvar or your Captain ASAP!!
